Put on your new nature, and be renewed
as you learn to know your Creator
and become like him.
Colossians 3:10
So only two days until the new year rolls in and if you take a look at your social media outlets your timeline will more than likely be swamped with people saying something like "new year, new me" or I'm leaving this or that in the old year. What's crazy about this is that just as many post as you see of "new year, new me" you will see people saying something like "here comes the new year new me crap" or "new year, same me." I'm not here to press judgement but it bothered me on both ends of the spectrum.
I mean shouldn't people want to change? Shouldn't there always be some type of progress in a person's life? At the same time, what's the point of saying you're changing if you always stay the same? As I recall people in the Bible, I think about how their whole lives were centered around change and God doing a work in them. I've been dealing with this thing called change for a minute now and I would be lying to you if I said I didn't want to change for the better. The Bible says, Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him (Colossians 3:10). You see when Jesus died on the cross for our sins change happened right then and there. Jesus took everything we would ever do, say, or think upon that cross and died for us. As we continue to dive into Gods word we should constantly be changing. Colossians 3:10 says, we should put on our new nature as we learn to know our Creator. We scream out new year, new me and twelve days out of the new year we are back to doing and being the same people. It is through Jesus Christ that we are renewed (changed), not ourselves. It is through learning more and more about Him that God can really transform you into a new you.
The Bible says, Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it (Luke 9:23-24 NLT). You see in order to change you must really put down everything that keeps you from seeing who God truly is and follow Him. If its that boyfriend or girlfriend that you know isn't good for you then so be it. If its lying, smoking. drinking, sex, whatever it is, put it down. I believe that God tells us everyday, not just the beginning of a new year but everyday to put down things that don't help in renewing who we are meant to be in Him. I guess what I want people to get out of this blog post is that change is good. But we don't have to wait until the beginning of the new year to declare that we will do things differently. Let's make up in our minds that we will pick up our cross daily and follow Him. From there He will change us and we will be better than we ever were before.
