But the Lord said to Samuel,
“Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him.
The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them.
People judge by outward appearance,
but the Lord looks at the heart.”
I Samuel 16:7
I'm so glad that God doesn't see us the way others do? He examines our heart while people judge our outer appearance, the things we do or have done. When you're chosen by God, your blessing and the purpose that God has for you can never bypass you. People can't begin to look over you because what God has for you is for you.
I Samuel chapter 16 tells us the story of David being anointed as the future King of Israel. The Lord gave Samuel specific instructions when it came to anointing the next king of Israel. When Samuel comes to Bethlehem he finds Jesse and his sons then does what God has instructed him to do. The Bible says, "When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the LORD’s anointed!” But the Lord said to Samuel, Don't judge by his appearance or height for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (I Samuel 16:6-7). The Bible goes on to say how Samuel took a look at all seven of Jesse's sons, but Samuel said to Jesse the Lord had not chosen any of them. Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” "There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.” “Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.” So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.” So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on (I Samuel 16:11-13).
This story is amazing in so many ways, but the one thing that stuck out to me the most was the favor of God. You see when Samuel came to town and looked among Jesse's sons for the next king of Israel, David wasn't even invited. Here he was in the fields watching over the sheep and goats while his brothers were being examined to be the next king. I'm sure he thought to himself, "why wasn't I invited and my brothers were? Am I not good enough to be looked at and even considered to become king?" I love how God works for us. You see when God has a plan for you no one can come in between that plan. Not your mother, father, that manager, that professor, no one! The Bible says, For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). Do you understand that David's father couldn't even stand in the way of God's plan for him. Samuel goes on to say, "send for him at once, we will not sit down to eat until he arrives." When God is for you things have to stop. That purpose can't be fulfilled without you.
We have to understand that the Lord will fight for us. It is our job to just stay calm (Exodus 14:14). People may be progressing in life ahead of you, just stay calm. People may be receiving promotion at your job and you're not. Stay calm because God will fight for you no matter what. The Bible says, "Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him (Matthew 7:9-11)! Its not for you to worry about why this is happening or why this isn't happening. God's intentions were never for you to worry. The Bible says, "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7). Know that God has you covered. Don't worry, don't doubt, just trust that He's got you. Remember that you don't have to pry doors open when it comes to the plan God has for you. David didn't have to go knocking doors down to become anointed as the King of Israel. Trust that it is in God's hands because He has a plan for you! God is not a mediocre God, therefore nothing that He does and nothing of Him is average. You won't always be where you are.
